Oregon Supreme Court Justice Jack Landau Announces Retirement

Justice Jack L. Landau today announced that he will retire from the Oregon Supreme Court on December 31, 2017. Landau announced his retirement today in a letter to Governor Kate Brown.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve Oregonians as an appellate judge these last 25 years,” Landau said. “Courts serve a vital role in our democracy by protecting our rights and ensuring that government agencies act within their authority as they do their jobs. I am looking forward to helping teach the next generation of lawyers and judges the values and principles that help keep Oregon a special place to live.”

“Jack Landau’s retirement is a loss for the Supreme Court and the people of Oregon,” said Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Balmer. “He brought an incisive intellect and balanced, thoughtful reasoning to his work on the Court, wrote many important opinions, and is the most prolific author on the Court in 25 years.”

Landau was elected to the Supreme Court in 2010, after serving for 18 years on the Oregon Court of Appeals. Prior to his judicial service, he held a variety of posts in the Oregon Department of Justice and worked at the Portland law firm of Lindsay, Hart, Neil & Weigler. He also has taught as an adjunct professor at the Willamette University College of Law and the Lewis & Clark Law School.

Landau, 64, lives in Portland with his wife, and has two adult sons. He was raised in Oregon, graduating from Portland’s Franklin High School and Lewis & Clark College. He plans to continue teaching law at Oregon’s law schools.

Governor Brown will appoint Landau’s replacement.
